Ashwagandha is a small evergreen shrub, commonly grown in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa, the root and berries of which are used to make medicine. Considered the prized herb of India, Ashwagandha has been used for centuries in the practice of Ayurveda (traditional Hindu medicine). Ashwagandha is commonly used for stress. It is also used as an "adaptogen" for many other conditions – which are theorized to help the body resist physiological and psychological stress. Ashwagandha has been reported to have benefit for anxiety, mood, improved well-being and more restful sleep, relief of daytime fatigue, memory, inflammation, diabetes, low thyroid hormone, arthritis, and increased sexual satisfaction in women, among multiple other benefits. Ashwagandha is generally reported to be safe, however excessive doses can cause an upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The benefits of Ashwagandha are reported to be best seen after routine/daily use at low doses, and take multiple weeks to reach full effect. Ashwagandha Root is commonly used at doses of 250mg to 2400mg (or ¼ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of root powder) daily, depending on the strength of the powder and differences from person to person. Ashwagandha Root Powder is generally mixed into a smoothie, tea, or other beverage of choice, whereas the Cut and Sifted Roots are ideal for use in teas. Many sources of Ashwagandha sell only crude powder, and even if organic, could potentially be lower quality, less potent, and even contaminated.
