Horsetail (Organic)

Horsetail is a plant, and the above ground parts are used to make medicine. People use horsetail for "fluid retention" (edema), urinary tract infections, loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence), and topically for burns and wounds, among other conditions. The chemicals in horsetail may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Horsetail contains chemicals that work like "water pills" (diuretics) and increase urine output. Horsetail is NOT always appropriate for every person, as its use can be unsafe, especially if long-term. Long-term use of horsetail is notably concerning because it contains a chemical called thiaminase, which breaks down the vitamin thiamine. In theory, this effect could lead to thiamine deficiency, which can have serious health consequences. Additionally, Horsetail use can have further risks such as low potassium in the body (hypokalemia), and also could lead to lower blood sugar levels which could be dangerous in some people. As with many natural medicines there is limited evidence to fully evaluate the safety and effectiveness of their use, so please consult your physician before using this product.
