Description

Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) Seed has a long history of use in herbal folklore. The Horse Chestnut tree is a member of the Buckeye family. The Horse chestnut got its name due to the shiny brown ‘conkers’ or seeds which look  like Chestnuts but are actually not true chestnuts. Also, a horse-shoe mark is left on the twig after the leaf drops in autumn.

The beautiful large flower that adorns the Horse Chestnut tree in the spring, is the symbol of the city of Kiev, capital of Ukraine. A famous specimen is the Anne Frank Tree, a horse chestnut tree in Amsterdam which Ann Frank mentioned in her diary. In Britain and Ireland, the nuts are used for the popular game called conkers, where a string is passed through the nut and contestants attempt to break each other’s conkers to bits. Horse chestnuts can be used to make jewelry using the conkers as beads. As herbal support, Horse Chestnut has been used to assist in sustaining healthy venous circulation in the extremities.

Horse chestnut is a tree native to parts of southeastern Europe. Its fruits contain seeds that resemble sweet chestnuts but have a bitter taste. Historically, horse chestnut seed extract was used for joint pain, bladder and gastrointestinal problems, fever, leg cramps, and other conditions. Today, horse chestnut seed extract is promoted for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI; poor blood flow in the veins of the legs, which may lead to leg pain, swelling, itchiness, and other symptoms), irritable bowel syndrome, male infertility, and other conditions.
