Holy basil (Osimum sanctum) is also referred to as TULSI in the ancient Indian System of Ayurveda. It has been documented for its benefits for over 3,000 years. The Holy basil plant is the Laminaceae family, and is a shrub perennial with pink-purple flowers and a refreshing lemon aromatic scent. Holy Basil or Tulsi, is not the same plant as Sweet Basil that is often used in Italian and Asian recipes. The Holy Basil plant grows in many tropical areas around the world, and contains a variety of active naturally occurring components, including eugenol, gamma-caryophyllene , ocimumosides A and B, methyl eugenol, along with vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin K. Tulsi is highly regarded for a wide range of supportive actions by traditional and folkloric systems, and is considered a sacred plant by the Hindus. The Ayurvedic system considers Tulsi as the “Queen of the Herbs” because of its wide ranging balancing attributes.
