Dong Quai Extract

Dong quai, also known as Chinese angelica, is a member of the plant family Apiaceae, which includes parsley, celery, carrots, and poison hemlock. It is a popular plant in Chinese medicine, where it is used primarily for health conditions in women, garnering the nickname "female ginseng.” For centuries, the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans have used dong quai to treat women who are tired, recovering from illnesses, or have low vitality. It is also a major component in formulas that combine several herbs to treat liver qi (energy) stasis and spleen deficiency. One of the first descriptions of dong quai's use as a blood-strengthening and liver tonic dates to the year 588. Orally, dong quai is used for osteoporosis, dysmenorrhea, migraine headache, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and menopausal symptoms. It is also used orally for hypertension, idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, infertility, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), peptic ulcers, iron deficiency anemia, constipation, atopic disease, vitiligo, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis (eczema). Topically, dong quai is used as part of a multi-ingredient cream for premature ejaculation.
