Additional Information

Coriander is a plant. Both the leaves and fruit (seeds) of coriander are used as food and medicine. However, the term "coriander" is typically used to refer to the fruit, and Coriander leaves are usually referred to as cilantro. In the Old Testament, manna is described as "white like coriander seed.” Greek and Roman physicians, including Hippocrates, prized it as a medicine. According to herbal texts, during the Chinese Han dynasty approximately 2,000 years ago, it was thought to have the power to make people immortal. Others believed that coriander aroused passion, because it was referred to as an aphrodisiac in the classic Arabian novel "A Thousand and One Nights." Across many cultures it was historically used for the treatment of upset stomach. Overall, its use is well known in Ayurvedic, Arabic, Chinese, Latin American, and South American systems of medicine and cuisine. In foods, coriander is used as a culinary spice and to prevent food poisoning. Orally, Coriander is most commonly promoted to be used for IBS, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and to stimulate the appetite. Additionally, Coriander is reported to help with insomnia, anxiety, convulsions, diabetes, joint pain and inflammation, to help with certain infections (bacterial, fungal, worms), and to stimulate lactation Topically, coriander oil is used for athlete's foot. As with many complementary and alternative medicines, there is limited scientific information available to fully validate the effectiveness and safety, so please consult your physician before use.
