Is Cranberry Right For Me?

Cranberry to Prevent Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).

Many people have heard that using cranberry as a supplement may help with urinary tract infections.  The main point to keep in mind, is that Cranberry CAN help prevent an infection, but does not actually cure a current infection.

What is a UTI?

A UTI is an infection that occurs as bacteria work their way into the urinary tract and potentially deeper into the urinary system, such as into the bladder or kidneys.

Symptoms of a bladder infection can include:

  • Pain or burning while urinating
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling the need to urinate despite having an empty bladder
  • Bloody urine
  • Pressure or cramping in the groin or lower abdomen

Symptoms of a kidney infection can include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Lower back pain or pain in the side of your back
  • Nausea or vomiting

What are common causes of UTIs?

  • A previous UTI
  • Sexual activity
  • Changes in the bacteria that live inside the vagina, or vaginal flora. For example, menopause or the use of spermicides can cause these bacterial changes.
  • Pregnancy
  • Age (older adults and young children are more likely to get UTIs)
  • Structural problems in the urinary tract, such as enlarged prostate
  • Poor hygiene, for example, in children who are potty-training

How is it believed Cranberry helps?

Bacteria can get into the urinary tract and attach inside allowing them to grow more and for the infection to work its way deeper into the body.  It is thought that cranberry helps in this process by making it harder for the bacteria to attach in the urinary tract and preventing infection.  Cranberry contains proanthocyanidins (PACs), and it is believed they are responsible for the benefits of using cranberry to prevent UTIs.
