Why should I try and keep a regular sleep schedule?
Believe it or not, your body does best following a regular sleep rhythm. When we try to go to sleep at the same time every night, and wake up at the same time, even on weekends, it helps our body maintain a natural sleep cycle.
How much sleep do I really need?
Some people are concerned they are not sleeping enough. On average 7-8 hours of sleep is recommended, but don’t be discouraged if you wake up early and refreshed. Your body is the best judge of how much sleep you really need.
What if I have trouble falling asleep, or feeling tired when I know I should be going to bed?
Many people experience difficulty falling asleep. There are some general practices that help us go to sleep at the right time each night.
- Take time to wind down each day, and avoid bright lights and stimulus in the hours before bedtime.
- Try to keep a calming and relacing environment in your home in the hours before bed, especially in the bedroom!
- Avoid screen time – cellphones and television before bed.
- Avoid late night eating and drinking.
- Avoid caffeine (coffee, teas, sodas, etc…) later in the day to ensure they are not keeping you awake.
- Avoid alcohol before bed.
- The more active we are during the day, the better we will sleep at night. Routine exercise is helpful!
